Our Values
Integrity
We do what we say we will do. We own our decisions, admit mistakes quickly, and protect your best interests in every recommendation.
Transparency
We show our work. We explain the numbers, surface trade‑offs, and share clear updates so you always know where things stand.
Collaboration
We partner with you and your team. We listen first, co‑design workflows, and coordinate with your CPA, bank, and surety.
Excellence
We raise the bar. We dig into the details, tighten controls, and refine processes until they reliably support a scalable business.
Curiosity
We ask better questions. We probe into how your jobs really run, test assumptions, and explore new ways to remove friction.
Servant Leadership
We lead by serving. We clear roadblocks, model calm in the chaos, and guide your team toward better decisions without ego.
Empowerment
We equip your people. We document workflows, train your team, and build tools so they can execute confidently without you.
Humanity
We remember there are people behind every number. We respect your time, honor your goals, and design solutions that support your life, not just your balance sheet.
Our Rockstars
Chris J. Murphy, CPA
Founder and CEO
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Chris works with one type of client: 0–50 employee construction companies that want their back office to finally run better and a numbers guy at the leadership table. After working across multiple industries, he realized construction owners are some of the hardest‑working people out there — but also some of the most underserved when it comes to bookkeeping, accounting, systems, financial leadership and financial clarity. Breakaway exists to fix that.
Chris takes a no‑nonsense, practical approach: build clean processes, implement the right tech, get the numbers right, give owners real visibility and financial leadership so they can make money, grow confidently, and sleep at night. He’s digitally minded, construction‑focused, and passionate about helping owners reduce chaos behind the scenes.
Before founding Breakaway, Chris spent years in public accounting, union benefit fund auditing, and led client accounting & advisory teams specializing in construction at a top 10 national accounting firm. That experience showed him exactly how outdated and bureaucratic traditional firms can be — and why smaller construction teams need something better. He’s committed to building a modern, nimble firm that treats its people exceptionally well, because great people take incredible care of clients.
His work includes leading financial turnarounds, building mixed internal/Breakaway accounting teams, running disciplined month‑end closes, implementing construction cloud accounting solutions, and giving owners the continued financial leadership and expert guidance to grow. Chris also is very passionate about and has deep experience with construction‑specific tech stacks.
On the personal side, Chris was born and raised in Chicago and moved with his wife and daughter to the South Hills of Pittsburgh three years ago — and they’ve loved it ever since. When he’s not helping construction owners get their back office under control, you’ll usually find him spending time with family, working out, playing hockey, or following the Chicago Blackhawks. He’s a family‑first guy who lives a simple life and who believes in working hard, staying active, and doing right by the people who count on him.
